Frequently Asked Questions
Do you get paid to reenact?
No. It is a hobby, like sports, video games, fishing, or any other.
What do I need to reenact?
See the New Recruit Needs page for a supply list.
Is it expensive?
Not really. No more than any other hobby. Most of the cost is the musket. (Compare this to a video game player, etc.) However once you have your gear, you can use it for many years.
What if I can't afford everything at first.
You have a year to get all of your required items. Some members may also have items to loan. Some sutlers have package deals that help with the cost. If not start with buying things that are hard to borrow, such as brogans and pants.
Where do I get my gear?
See the Sutler and Other Links page. There are some links to online Sutlers (retailers). There are also sutlers at most events.
Can my family reenact as well?
Families are allowed, however all members must be dressed in period clothing. See the Guidelines page for more details.
The website says the 6th KY came from the Glasgow / Cave City area. What if I'm not from there? Do I have to have an ancestor that was in the 6th KY to join?
You don't have to live in this area to join. We have members from all over. You don't have to have an ancestor in the 6th KY to join. Even if your ancestor was in a different unit you can still honor them by being a member of the 6th KY.
What are the rules?
See the Guidelines page.
How many events are there in a year and how far away are they?
We try to do one event per month from April to Oct. We go to events in different parts of the state. Also see the Guidelines and Schedule pages.
How do I join?
Go to the Contact Information page and email Captain Jefferies.
How do I learn to fight and use my musket?
After you pay your dues, you will get a training DVD. We also have drill at events where you will learn to safely protray a civil war soldier.
How do I get rank?
You will get a paper in your new member kit that talks about it. Rank takes time and has to be given out in the proper ratio. If your looking to be a General, this is not the unit for you.
I'm a teacher looking for a guest speaker for my civil war class. Can you help me?
Email Captain Jefferies. He has spoken to several schools in Kentucky.
How do you know if you get shot?
That is a reenactor secret. You have to join to find out.
What if I have anymore questions?
Email Captain Jefferies and include your phone number. He would be glad to talk to you and help you out. Chance is there is a member in your area you can speak to as well.
